Do I have a good chance of getting Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Posted by admin on December 15, 2011

My grandmother was diagnosed with RA when she was in her early 20′s, and spent her whole life suffering with it. I’m nearing my 20′s, and for the past 5 years or so, there have been days where I have joint pains, mainly in my legs, but also in my fingers and elbows from time to time. I’m not sure if I could have a chance of getting it, since she was not immediate family. But could I possibly have RA in my lifetime?

Chosen Answer:

Although there is an hereditary link to Rheumatoid Arthritis, you may also go through all of your life without it. RA is an autoimmune disorder, and you are also at risk for other autoimmune disorders. This said, if one is diagnosed, there has never been a better time in history to have an autoimmune disorder. These are frequently managed now, preventing joint damage or other issues. If you have questions about your own situation, ask your own doctor, and a fairly simple blood test can indicate whether you have this issue, or whether your discomfort comes from one of the many other potential sources of muscular or joint aches. Best wishes.

Well, just because a relative has RA it does not mean you have it. And it could also stay ‘dormant’ for the rest of your life, since it’s triggered by trauma, stress, exhaustion, anger and so forth.

However, if you have joint pain you may already have displayed some symptoms so perhaps it may be a good idea to have it checked out. However, even if you do have RA, don’t despair because today there are many ways in both traditional medicine and alternative medicine to keep this disease into ‘remission’.
